UCAT · Situational Judgement
UCAT SJT appropriateness questions
Rate how appropriate one response to a scenario is, on a four-point scale.
How to spot it
- How appropriate are each of the following responses ...?
Try one
Original example
Ravi is a final-year medical student on a hospital ward. He sees a junior doctor, Ella, about to give a patient an antibiotic. Ravi read in the patient's notes that morning that the patient is allergic to penicillin, and the antibiotic is a penicillin.
How appropriate is this response by Ravi? Tell Ella straight away, before she gives the drug, what he read in the notes.
The method
- Ask first: does it keep the patient or public safe?
- Then: is it honest, and does it go through the right person?
- Rate the response as given, not a better one you would prefer.
The trap
Watch forMarking down a response that is right because it feels awkward, such as correcting someone more senior.
Now a harder one
Harder
Ravi is a final-year medical student on a hospital ward. He sees a junior doctor, Ella, about to give a patient an antibiotic. Ravi read in the patient's notes that morning that the patient is allergic to penicillin, and the antibiotic is a penicillin.
How appropriate is this response by Ravi? Wait until Ella has given the drug, then tell the nurse in charge what he saw.
