Verbal Reasoning has the lowest average every year. A 602 in VR is as ordinary as a 675 in QR, so compare each subtest with its own column. Abstract Reasoning was dropped after 2024, when its average was 653.

Reading one score

Worked example VR 640, DM 640, QR 640

A candidate scores 640 in all three subtests in 2026. Which is strongest against the cohort?

Why this works: Verbal Reasoning. 640 in VR sits between the 70th and 80th percentiles. In DM it sits between the 50th and 60th (640 is the 50th percentile cut point), and in QR between the 40th and 50th (640 is the 40th).

Why the tempting route fails: Treating equal scores as equal strength. The same number means a different place in each subtest.

Use your weakest subtest

Universities that rank by decile, such as Edinburgh, turn your total into a band. Raising your lowest subtest moves the total most cheaply.
