UCAT QR calculator tips and keyboard practice
The UCAT calculator is a basic on-screen calculator available in QR and DM. The most useful starting habit is to decide the calculation before entering numbers. Use the official Tour Tutorial to rehearse the controls; keyboard behaviour on your laptop may differ from the test-centre setup.
Practise recovery as well as speed
UCAT's test-tools guidance says keyboard number entry needs Num Lock on. Clicking outside the calculator or using a shortcut can deactivate it; click back inside to restore focus. If shortcuts fail, use the mouse. The source explains Alt plus an underlined letter for navigation, such as Alt + N for next.
Our routine: estimate the answer, enter one operation at a time, read the display, then check the unit. Clear an old result before a new calculation. Rehearse memory controls in the official tutorial rather than assuming your phone calculator behaves identically.
Reduce the arithmetic before typing
Worked example Compare delivery costs
Original teaching example. A clinic orders 18 boxes at £14.80 each. A supplier gives 12% off the goods, then adds £9 delivery. What is the total, to the nearest penny? Options: £234.43, £242.35, £243.43, £275.40, £299.45.
Why this works: Goods cost 18 × 14.80 = £266.40. After the discount: 266.40 × 0.88 = £234.432. Add delivery to get £243.432, which rounds to £243.43. Estimate first: the final bill should be below £275.40 but above £234.
Why the tempting route fails: Discounting delivery too gives (266.40 + 9) × 0.88 = £242.352, or £242.35. The wording applies the discount only to goods. More accurate typing cannot rescue the wrong setup.
Record the error you can fix
- Wrong operation: rewrite the relationship before entering numbers.
- Wrong entry: slow the first input and check the display.
- Wrong unit or rounding: carry the unrounded result until the final step.
- Lost focus: practise clicking back into the calculator and continuing.
This is a practice method, not a promise of seconds saved. No shortcut or simulator is claimed to match the official software unless checked against it.
