How to prepare for UCAT in eight weeks

Use eight weeks to move from learning the question types to timed practice and full-test rehearsal, with review throughout. This is our suggested structure, not an official minimum or a score guarantee. UCAT recommends its tutorials before practice questions and timed practice tests nearer the test date.

Give each fortnight a job

WeeksSuggested workEvidence to keep
1–2Use the official Tour and question tutorials. Try small sets in each subtest.A short error list, split by reasoning and interface mistakes
3–4Repair repeated errors with untimed examples, then fresh short timed sets. The explanation for each miss, not just a percentage
5–6Mix question types and rehearse pacing. Arrange a suitable full-test window.Questions reached, avoidable misses and time spent stuck
7–8Use official timed practice nearer your date. Review it and keep the final schedule manageable.A specific next action after each practice session

Adjust the balance using what your work shows. If a method is still unclear, another long timed set may reveal the same problem without repairing it. Conversely, untimed success alone does not establish that you can execute under time pressure.

Plan from available time

Worked example Allocate a realistic week

Original teaching example. A learner has four 30-minute weekday slots and one 90-minute weekend slot. They reserve 20 minutes from every weekday slot for practice and the remaining 10 for review. How much review time is already protected, and can the weekend slot hold a standard full UCAT rehearsal?

Why this works: The weekday slots protect 4 × 10 = 40 minutes of review. Ninety minutes is too short for the standard test, which UCAT describes as just under two hours. Find a separate suitable window or use the weekend slot for a shorter task and label it accurately.

Why the tempting route fails: Four half-hours plus ninety minutes totals 210 minutes, but scattered time is not one uninterrupted mock window. Removing all review to fit more questions also changes the plan's purpose.

Change the plan when the evidence changes

  • Protect school, work and rest commitments when choosing sessions.
  • Use your approved timing when practising for access arrangements.
  • After each session, choose one repair: interpretation, reasoning, arithmetic or pacing.
  • If your test date changes, move future sessions rather than pretending the original calendar still fits.

Eight weeks is a planning choice. This guide does not claim that a particular number of hours causes a particular score. The practice link starts one skill; it is not a substitute for official materials or rehearsal across the test.
