Questions people ask
Which universities accept Access to Medicine?
For 2027, 24 UK medical schools accept the Access to HE Diploma on their five-year course, including King's, UCL, Bristol, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle and Edinburgh. Lincoln and Nottingham accept it only on their foundation years.
Which medical schools do not accept Access courses?
Aston, Bangor, Birmingham, Brunel, Glasgow, Imperial, Lancashire, Queen Mary, Queen's Belfast, St Andrews and Sunderland.
How many Distinctions do I need for medicine?
Most schools ask for all 45 graded credits at Distinction. King's and City St George's take 39 Distinction and 6 Merit, UCL 36 and 9, and Anglia Ruskin, Bristol, Exeter and Kent and Medway 30 and 15.
Can I do Access to Medicine straight after A-levels?
Usually not. Many schools want three years out of education first and say Access is not a way to resit poor A-levels.
Do I need the UCAT with an Access diploma?
Yes, almost everywhere. Liverpool and Exeter ask graduates to sit the GAMSAT instead.

How we work this out
What it does
Add your expected Distinction and Merit credits. We check every UK medical school's 2027 Access rules.
Standard-entry medicine at 44 UK medical school courses for 2027 entry, for applicants with an Access to HE Diploma (60 credits, 45 graded at Level 3).
Method
- We read each medical school's 2027 entry pages and admissions policy, UCAS and the Medical Schools Council profiles on 5 October 2026, and every acceptance and credit rule was re-checked independently.
- Your Distinction and Merit credits are compared with each school's published minimum.
- Time out of education, previous degrees and fee status are checked where a school sets a rule.
- Rules your answers cannot settle (approved providers, age, subject credits) are checks, never passes. Where a school's own pages conflict, it is a check.
