Weekend staffing

A venue needs six staff on duty from 09:00 to 17:00 on both Saturday and Sunday. All eight hours of each shift are paid; no breaks need cover.

Staff typeHourly payMaximum weekend hours per person
Permanent£1412
Agency£1916

Four permanent staff are available. Any remaining hours are covered by agency staff. Both rates increase by 25% for Sunday work. Shifts can be split into whole hours.

Using all available permanent hours, how many agency hours are required?

Not this time0 of 1 mark

E: 48Subtract available permanent hours from the full staffing requirement.

  1. Required staff-hours are

    6×8×2=966\times 8\times 2=96
  2. Agency hours needed are

    96−4×12=4896-4\times 12=48

Trap This gives each permanent employee only six hours.

  • AThis gives each permanent employee 16 hours despite their cap.
  • BThis counts just one day: 48 staff-hours minus four permanent employees working eight hours each.
  • DThis ignores all permanent cover.
